How to Lookup your IP Address

Every device that is connected to the public Internet is delegated a unique number called an Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses comprise of four numbers which are separated by periods, an example would be 124.5.1.2.4.

Because these numbers are generally specified to internet service providers within region-based blocks, an IP address can often be exploited to distinguish the general area  from which a computer is connecting to the Internet.

Since the numbers are very tedious to deal with, an IP address can also be allotted a Host name. Host names may be searched  find IP addresses, and vice-versa. There was a time when ISPs issued one IP address for each user that were called static IP addresses. Because there's a limited number of IP addresses and with an increase in the usage of the internet, ISPs today now issue IP addresses in a dynamic fashion from a pool of IP addresses (Using DHCP) that can be referred to as dynamic IP addresses. This also serves to limit the power of the user to host websites, mail servers, ftp servers, etc.
